Christmas is celebrated by many all across the world as a day to be with loved ones, to exchange presents and that all important Christmas dinner.
In the Roman calendar the winter solstice is recorded as the 25th December. They linked Jesus to the sun and because the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year they believed that from his birth the days increased.
Even though the actual date of Jesus’ birth isn’t known, many have placed it on this day and have continued to celebrate it.
Though many aren’t religious we still love to take part in this festive day but did you know that in Puritan England, Christmas was actually banned as it was associated with drunkenness and other misbehaviours. It wasn’t till 1660 it was made a legal holiday but it did remain disreputable to many.
It wasn’t till the 19th century that Christmas and all its festivities became widespread. Christianity emphasised the nativity and charity giving to the poor, and many authors came out with stories of our loveable ‘old saint nick’.
Despite the history of Christmas I personally love the idea of being able to spend the day with family and loved ones as I believe there is nothing more important than that.
I hope you all have an amazing December and ,when we get to it, a lovely Christmas if that is what you choose to celebrate.
